Looking for how to travel from Surabaya to Bromo? You have to make a wise decision on the type of transport you going to take a ride on in this second largest city in Indonesia.

Our airplane landed on Juanda International Airport, Surabaya in the hot afternoon of 12p.m and we know we have to reach Mount Bromo as soon as possible.

The hotel in Mount Bromo promise us to hold our room booking until 5p.m which means we have 5 hours left tick tock in our watch.

Before travel from Surabaya to Bromo, we have checked the distance is around 100km and Google Maps optimistically told us it’s going to be 2 hours 10 minutes journey.

Transportation To Bromo

So what is the choices you got to travel from Surabaya to Bromo? I read on the guide on Lonely Planet before and it says we can take public transport from Juanda International Airport, Surabaya.

Buy the ticket near entrance gate and take Damri Bus from airport to Bungurasih bus station. Do not get off the bus until the Damri Bus enter the Bungurasih bus station.

Take a bus from Bungurasih to Probolinggo and from there continue to rent a bemo to Cemoro Lawang, Bromo. The overall public transport rate is quite cheap according to the travel guide.

However, we opt to hire a transporter to bring us from Surabaya to Bromo with the cost of 600,000 Indonesia Rupiah one way due to travel time uncertainty.

During the journey, we found the traffic is heavy around Surabaya and the transporter even took the small village road (known as Jalan Tikus) to avoid the jam.

Our transporter drive and cut the queue all the way to Bromo. Just close your eyes and pray to reach the destination

Mount Bromo, I am here at last! From Surabaya to Probolinggo took 3 hours and from Probolinggo to Bromo took 1 and half hours. That’s almost 5 hours in total with furious driving speed!

I can’t imagine if we take public transport from Surabaya to Bromo, maybe we are still stuck in the midway to Malang. By the way, Google Maps just predict the travel time without traffic.
